More quickly and more definitively we’ll be able to answer the questions: are we helping residents and clients live more purpose-driven lives? Are we helping residents reenter communities with the knowledge, skills, health and stability necessary to stay out of the justice system?

Data integration in progress

Making data-powered progress.

The Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) is embarking on a new model of corrections in order to ensure residents and community corrections clients see fewer barriers as they meaningful engage with rehabilitative focused services. The MDOC has taken steps to positively normalize the environment within facilities by designing more therapeutic living spaces, reduce the shame and trauma associated with stigmatizing language by replacing such words with person-first language, and by creating an atmosphere of constructive problem solving and mutual respect.

Central to MDOC meeting this mission is the partnership with Recidiviz which helps the MDOC better understand and evaluate efforts, while equipping staff to make data-driven decisions to drive forward further progress. Under the leadership of Commissioner Randall Liberty and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ryan Thornell, MDOC has established itself as a national leader in implementing innovative, cutting-edge programs and policies – from farm-to-table agriculture and culinary arts programs, to universal access to medication-assisted treatment, to earned living units with access to creature comforts and open movement, to a nationally recognized intensive mental health unit offering robust treatment, this department is one to watch.

We are committed to setting a new trend in corrections, one that ensures residents and clients have every opportunity to meaningfully engage their rehabilitation. We do this by treating people with respect, by creating an atmosphere for growth within the facilities, and by choosing partners that align with our values. Recidiviz is such a partner. With this platform, we’ll be able to monitor and measure the success of our efforts to this new model of corrections.
