How Recidiviz Uses AI

We use artificial intelligence to help make the justice system work better—for everyone. That means less paperwork for agency staff, better tools for understanding complex data, and smarter ways to support people in the system. But we know AI can raise important questions. Here's how we’re using it, and what we’re doing to make sure it’s safe, fair, and in your control.

Why are state agencies adopting Recidiviz’s AI solutions?

Agencies are choosing to use AI because it helps them do more with less. Many are facing staffing shortages, high caseloads, and tight budgets. AI offers a way to reduce repetitive work, surface important insights faster, and improve consistency across teams.

By adopting AI, partners can:

  • Get faster access to the information they need to make decisions
  • Save time on administrative work, freeing staff to focus on people
  • Tailor services to individual needs more easily
  • Spot trends and potential issues early, before they escalate

We see AI as a tool that helps agencies operate more effectively—not just as a tech upgrade, but as a way to improve outcomes for the people they serve.

Is it secure?

Yes. We treat justice system data with the highest level of care and protection.

  • All data stays in the U.S. on secure Google Cloud infrastructure.
  • We meet strict standards like SOC-2, HIPAA, FedRAMP Moderate, and NIST 800-53.
  • Only authorized staff can access sensitive information.
  • We minimize data use—only what’s needed for the task at hand.
  • When using external AI tools, we vet vendors thoroughly for safety and privacy.

Is it ethical and fair?

We don’t believe in “black box” AI or using algorithms to make life-altering decisions without human input. Here’s how we keep it responsible:

  • Humans are always in charge. AI provides suggestions or summaries, but people make the decisions.
  • We check for bias. Before we use an AI model, we evaluate it for fairness across different groups. We also monitor it over time.
  • We keep learning. We stay up to date on the latest in ethical AI and update our practices accordingly.

We use AI for things like:

  • Summarizing text like case notes or free-form fields.
  • Drafting content such as reports, messages, or reminders.
  • Generating code across our open-source platforms.
  • Understanding your data structure so tools fit your setup and catch issues early.
  • Matching people with jobs, services, or support based on their needs.
  • Reducing admin work so staff can spend more time helping people.

How is my data used?

We only use your data to support the work we’re doing with you—and never for anything outside of that partnership.

  • We don’t sell data, and we don’t use your data to train third-party AI.
  • You can opt out of AI features that use your data at any time.
  • You can also request specific limits on how AI interacts with your data.

Can I opt out of AI?

Yes. AI features are optional. If you’d rather not use them—or want tighter controls—we’re happy to work with you to make that happen.
